Sailing with Dolphins in New Zealand

Welcome to the North Island of New Zealand, in the well-known Bay of Islands, where I will be boarding a 50ft catamaran for the day. With its 144 islands, no need to say that there is a lot to explore in the area! In 1978, the maritime park was established to protect its abundant marine life, including Blue Penguins, big Marlins, Whales (Brydes and other migrating whales), Orcas, Common but also Bottlenose Dolphins, which are now endangered as their population in the bay has fallen by 66% since 1990. To help the struggling species, the NZ government decides in July 2019, to ban the dolphin swimming after research showed that interaction with humans was disrupting the dolphins’ natural behaviour. It’s only in the afternoon, after a walk and a barbecue on board, that we finally found the most incredible pod of Dolphins…
